Review: CATTLE DECAPITATION – ‘Monolith of Inhumanity’ (Metal Blade)

The new effort from Cattle Decapitation is insane.  The vocal power and range of Travis Ryan throughout the songs are impressive and scary, ranging from deep guttural rumbles to brutal growls to shrieks of terror.  The songs are a nonstop frenzy, fusing together death metal and grind.   The track  ”Gristle Licker” is a good example, starts of with some shredding, goes into a slow buildup with deep guttural growls, gets more crazed then slows down, cue the guitar solo, back to being slow – melodic even, then breaks into a fast paced onslaught, then sort of repeats.   The drum work on Monolith of Inhumanity is tight and very intricate.  I’m pretty sure drummer David McGraw had an extra bass drum pedal attached to handle how fast the blast beats were going at some points.  The structure work simply blows me away, how Cattle Decap arranged how the songs flow are nearly perfect.  My favorite songs are “The Carbon Stampede,” “Lifestalker,” “Your Disposal,” and “Kingdom of Tyrants,” as these are the songs I keep going back to listen to.  The harmonies combined with the brutality just makes for good songs, though the whole album is overall solid.  ”The Carbon Stampede” features past and current members of Cephalic Carnage for the gang vocal parts which is a very nice touch.  The greatest aspect of this release is that each song is different, taking you on a distinct roller coaster ride, nothing mundane here.   Having an album where every song captivates your attention is very rare nowadays, there always seems to be those few songs that are there for filler in between the really good ones of the album, not with Monolith of Inhumanity.
