You may remember us featuring a lovely lady named Emily Battleaxe in our Hotter Side of Metal segment back in March, what you probably don’t know is that she is totally awesome at sewing, making pillow versions of Muppets, Stewie Griffin, and even King Diamond!
When asked how making pillows and plushy toys started she commented:
“A severe depression. Not kidding.
Three years ago I was going through a rather bad time in my life and needed some sort of creative outlet. I had recently bought a sewing machine to tailor some clothes and thought that might take my mind off of stuff. During that summer, I found out that a friend of mine was pregnant and was planning to name her son Calvin. Naturally, I thought well, Calvin needs a Hobbes.
So I bought the materials. No patterns, no guidelines, only a photo from the web, and made him. It came together so quickly that I didn’t have time to really think about how I did it.”
With each character pillow typically taking up to three weeks to complete Emily explains:
“I’m finding that people have really creative ideas and wants, so no two are alike. But usually a “typical” project takes 2-3 weeks depending on how many others I’m working on.”
Let’s be real here, everyone loves pillows and speaking on her success she says:
“My friend gave me the initial go-ahead to make my first Muppet, which was Dr. Teeth. I had no clue what I was doing, but then suddenly, there he was. When he was complete and I posted photos, everything blew up suddenly. My Dr. Teeth went semi-viral via FB, Tumblr and Instagram. From what I’ve seen, custom handmade dolls/pillows are VERY popular, especially obscure things that stores don’t sell.”
